January 7, 2026
The New Year’s Toast ceremony was held on 6 January at the University of Pécs Medical School, when the leaders of the Faculty, the Clinical Centre and the Faculty of Pharmacy gathered together to summarise the events and achievements of 2025, highlight the plans for the future, and celebrate the newly appointed full professors and associate professors of the Medical School. „I have spent twenty years as a leader at the University of Pécs, including the four-year-long period as vice-dean, the eight-year-long period as dean and also the eight-year-long period as rector, and there has not been a moment when I have not been proud to be a member of the Medical School.” – Dr. Attila Miseta, Rector of the University of Pécs started his New Year’s greetings. He said that there had been difficult periods and the future would bring similar ones, but he was certain that the expertise that had gathered at the faculty and the cohesion that also characterised this community would give strength in the future to overcome any obstacles. He expressed his joy that the university, including the Medical School and the Clinical Centre, had continuously developed in the areas of infrastructure and technology, however he still sees a gap regarding technology, he does not think improvement is unachievable.
„In cooperation with the faculties of the University of Pécs, I believe that we have a bright future ahead of us. The environmental conditions contributes to this in every aspect, but with a little luck, understanding and help, these will also improve this year!” - said Dr. Attila Miseta.
Dr. Andor Sebestyén, Head of the Clinical Center, emphasised that more and more patients can be treated every year at the University of Pécs, for which they receive funding. He said that the debt of the Clinical Centre had not increased in 2025, and it seems that this will remain the case in the future. He also added that the available budget would be bigger in 2026, an additional one billion forints would be applicable in 2026 to operate the Clinical Centre. Regarding the investments, the development of equipment and infrastructure, he said that more and more funds had been allocated for these in the last couple of years.
„We would like to achive that the Pécs Diagnostic Center belongs to the University of Pécs in 2026, a law has already been published according to this. We also would like to increase patient satisfaction in the clinics and hospitals, make communication even more efficient between doctors and patients, therefore the number of lawsuits would decrease, which mean a serious matter now. Our goal is to support innovation, to develop and increase the number of unique services in Hungary in cooperation with the Medical School.” – Dr. Andor Sebestyén mentioned the future plans of the Clinical Centere, and reported development ideas for institutions and clinics, as well as their current status.
„The first thing that comes to mind regarding 2025 is that it was an interesting year, a lot happened. I consider the Medical School an oasis in Hungary, where we are able to think through everything and move forward according to our plans, and this will probably be the case in 2026, as well.” – said Dr. Miklós Nyitrai, Dean of the University of Pécs Medical School, in his welcome speech, adding that the faculty operates properly, its foundations are solid, and its community has also developed.
He believes that one of the great values of the Medical School is that they work according to concepts, and the community also feels that these are their own. Regarding enrollment, he said that the number of students were stable, compared to 2024, an additional 100 students first choice was the Hungarian General Medicine programme in 2025, and there was also great interest in the English programme as well, they had to put more effort to ensure the appropriate number of students chosing the German programme.
He underlined that the number of publications had been continuously increasing since 2016, and compared to other faculties, good progress had been achieved. He added that the Medical School added half of the publications of the University of Pécs. According to him, an additional goal is to increase the number of citations. He mentioned with pride that great progress had been made in obtaining the title of doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2025, as 9 colleagues had defended their doctoral thesis, while this number was a maximum of 3–4 in previous years. He also mentioned with joy that the National Student Research Conference had been held in 2025, which had been a great success with nearly 900 participants.
He mentioned the southern park, which was the largest project among the investments regarding financial need, the park proved to be a worthy entry into the theoretical building of the Medical School. Regarding the developments for 2026, he said that several of them would be started or completed this year, including the administrative areas and the modernisation of the Department of Primary Health Care. The renovation of the Department of Biophysics would be complete by the end of January. He also mentioned the establishment of a new research center at Honvéd utca 5. and the renovation of the building at Honvéd utca 1., which will host a Campus Club.
Regarding the challenges of 2026, he mentioned that there would be plenty of tasks, for example the Medical Cup, which is organised by the Medical School every four years, and this will be the case in 2026, as well. He also believes that ensuring that students and colleagues live in an increasingly beautiful and inspiring environment is important, as well as the need to continuously improve education.
